What is a Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK)?

HSK is the short form for Hanyu (Chinese) Shuiping (Level) Kaoshi (test). The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) literally means “Mandarin Level Test” or “Chinese Level Test”. It is an international standardized test to assess the Chinese-language proficiency of non-native speakers and also for Chinese people living overseas and Chinese national minorities.

The test measures your proficiency through listening, writing, and reading in the language. HSK tests are held across the world on a regular basis. Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency, assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic, and professional lives. HSK consists of six levels, namely HSK (level I), HSK (level II), HSK (level III), HSK (level IV), HSK (level V), and HSK (level VI).

The writing test consists of four levels, namely, YCT (level I), YCT (level II), YCT (level III), and YCT (level IV). The speaking test consists of two levels, YCT Speaking (Primary Level) and YCT Speaking (Intermediate Level).

Business Chinese Test (BCT) is another Chinese language proficiency test for foreigners engaged in business activities. This BCT test consists of two relatively independent tests: BCT (Listening & Reading) and BCT (Speaking & Writing). The candidates can sit for one or both of them at a time. There is no limit to candidates’ age, education, or Chinese proficiency level.
